Mold Questions?

Molds are simple, microscopic organisms that are needed for breaking down dead materials. Mold produce microscopic cells called “spores” which are very tiny and lightweight, allowing them to travel through the air. Live spores act like seeds, forming new mold growths (or colonies) when they find the right conditions. Mold needs water, food, and the right temperature range. Mold grows better in a dark environment, and with an organic, porous material to grow on.

Mold depending on the severity can be the cause of some really foul odors.  Most of the time its not the mold we are smelling per say, it’s the building material it’s trying to consume, is what is giving off the odor. If you are concerned about a certain smell or mold problem the best thing to do is to contact your local mold company. Have them come out and either visually inspect or take a sample and get it tested.

This highly toxic mold also call (Stachybotrys chartarum) if found in a home should be removed by a professional mold remediator to prevent cross contamination. Its usually very black in color and sometimes with pungent odor. This mold is usually present when there is a considerable amount of water damage on building materials.

We find these problems by inspecting “by context”, that is, we decide where to make an invasive test cut by studying where leak or moisture problems have been or are likely to have been on a building. Of course some important problematic mold reservoirs may be hidden inside building cavities where you won’t see them without making a test cut in just the right place.  With the help of the right instruments we can see behind walls

Mold testing is a valuable test which fully details, in a written report, any and all toxins and bacteria that are living in the air. But after the test, what next? Mold testing can get pretty expensive depending on how many rooms you want tested. If you see mold or mildew, or something you suspect may be mold or mildew, give us a call first! Our experts are very highly trained at detecting mold issues, and can offer lots of information on the type of mold and what caused it, as well as remediating the problem, and the best part of all, the evaluation is 100% FREE!

Ultimately, the price will depend on the solution. With mold jobs there usually priced by the sq-ft and also the severity of the mold. For the most part prepare yourself for at least anywhere from $3 to $10 sq-ft if not more in some extreme cases. We offer free evaluations for every estimate we go on.

Water Proofing Questions?

Heavy rains and improperly channeled roof water can over saturate the soil surrounding your homes foundation. Condensation on cooled surfaces – Ground water leaks-

Standing water- Wall discoloration- Efflorescence- Wall Cracks- High humidity- Musty Odors

Called ” Efflorescence” it occurs when evaporating water leaves behind salt deposits on the masonry appearing as a white powdery substance.

Every situation, and home is different. Exterior waterproofing could solve your problem but remember in order to successfully waterproof your home from the outside you have to dig around the foundation down to the footer. If there are many obstructions in the way like porches, garages, trees etc. those would have to be removed in order to successfully waterproof your home. Sometimes interior waterproofing is more practical.

First having a inside drainage system your in control of where the water is coming from and where you want it to go. Outside drainage pipes are usually ran along the foundation under ground a few feet, giving more chance for dirt and debris to clog the system. Inside you have a sump pump that’s easily accessible, and where a backup battery pump can be hooked up. With our drainage systems we also install clean outs in several locations to ensure your system stays clog free.

Every home is different and unique and depending on the severity of the problem that will influence cost. During our visit we will provide a free, no-obligation basement waterproofing quote to help you invest wisely when the time comes.

Crawlspace Questions?

Crawl space encapsulation is a process of lining your crawl space with heavy-duty polyethylene. Usually 12 to 20 mil thickness, the polyethylene barrier covers and seals the floors and walls and guards against harmful gases, pests and moisture.

A vapor barrier is needed in a crawlspace to maintain healthy moisture levels. Its also protects your joists and sheathing against conditions conducive for mold growth. Vapor barriers allow you to utilize the space under your home as well.

In short “YES” It is imperative that your crawlspace or basement have a dehumidifier. Moisture control is the secret in maintaining a dry healthy home. Moisture can destroy a homes foundation, beams and sheathing etc… Control the moisture and you control the mold.
